Electronic Mail (Email)

Unless you are using an encryption device (hardware or software), you should assume that mail on the Internet is not secure. Never put in a mail message anything you would not put on a postcard (such as your Waldonet password).

  • Unsolicited e-mail advertising (SPAM)
The cost of delivering an e-mail message is paid about equally by the sender and the recipient. This is unlike other media such as physical mail, telephone, TV, or radio. Sending someone mail may also cost them in other ways like network bandwidth, disk space or CPU usage. This is a fundamental economic reason why unsolicited commercial e-mail is unwelcome.

  • Chain Letters
Chain letters are forbidden on the Internet. If you are found to be sending chain letters, your account status will come under consideration.

  • Malicious Email
Repeatedly sending anyone e-mail with the intent to harass or harm their account (i.e., "flooding" or "mail bombing") is strictly forbidden. Participating in such may be grounds for account termination.

  • Computer Viruses
A computer virus is a program - a piece of executable code - that has the unique ability to replicate. Like biological viruses, computer viruses can spread quickly and are often difficult to eradicate. They can attach themselves to just about any type of file and are spread as files that are copied and sent from individual to individual.

Several years ago most viruses spread primarily via floppy disk, but the Internet has introduced new virus distribution mechanisms. With email now used as an important business communication tool, viruses are spreading faster than ever. Viruses attached to email messages can infect an entire enterprise in a matter of minutes, costing companies millions of dollars annually in productivity loss and clean-up expenses.

At Waldonet Ltd., all incoming and outgoing emails are scanned for viruses. The antivirus engine used is automatically updated with the latest DAT files. If an email is found to contain a virus, a message is automatically sent to the sender saying that his/her email did not reach its destination since it contained a virus.

The intended recipient will also receive a notification message by email explaining that the email in question was deleted because it contained a virus. Over 5000 viruses per month are identified and deleted before reaching their respective destinations. However, please be warned that no virus checker is 100% effective. New viruses are found daily, some of which you may not be protected from, since it may take a day or two until filters for a new virus become available.

File downloads may also consitute potential risk. Opening an infected file downloads it onto your machine and puts it at risk of damage. Hence it is recommended that you use your own anti-virus software to clean any problematic files. Download files at your own risk.
